Abstract
Surface water samples were collected during August, 1982, from lakes in the vicinity of Mount St. Helens, Washington, and examined for chemical and phytoplankton composition. Major cation concentrations differed in the lakes due to their relative positions to blast trajectories, ashfalls, mudflows, and pyroclastic flows. Both diatom and chrysophyte blooms were observed but other phytoplankton species, not likely to be preserved in the lake sediments, were recorded in significantly high numbers. The phytoplankton data is of particular interest for comparison with assemblages preserved in sediments formed under similar volcanic conditions.
