Abstract
The objective of this study was to compare water quality assessment on the basis of the “Saprobiensystem” using macroinvertebrates versus macrophytes as indicators of pollution. Relative abundances of macroinvertebrates and macrophytes were determined at twelve sampling stations of the river system Moosach (Upper Bavaria) and a saprobic and macrophytic index computed according to Pantle & Buck. The indices show similar results. Existing differences are due to different reaction times to changes in the degree of pollution. Although macrophytes may be indicators of pollution, they are not indicators of saprobity. Only organisms taking part in the destruction of organic matter or the following chain of consumption are actors and therefore indicators of saprobity. Macrophytes are primary producers and can only indicate the level of trophy.
