Abstract
A sorting procedure of the stream benthos samples is explained and tested. First, the samples are screened on three sieves (4, 1 and 0.4 mm mesh opening) in order to obtain 3 fractions. Three sorting methods are tested on the middle fraction (1 mm). The simple technique of “stirring” can largely reduce the sorting time. A sugar flotation applied on the 0.4 mm fraction is also very effective but the percentage of efficiency ranges from 100 to 22 according to the taxonomic groups. A subsampling method is also tested to estimate the number of individuals present in the flotation residue.
