Abstract
Diatom composition and distribution were studied in a Mediterranean river in Catalonia, NE Spain for a year. A hundred and twenty five taxa were found in the river. Ordination of the assemblages was carried out by a PCA. They proved to be dependant on the chemical characteristics of the water and human influence. An assemblage of Navicula, Nitzschia and Gomphonema was found in the hard, nutrient-rich waters of the middle reach. Fragilaria sp. pl. was dominant in hard, oxygenated waters below the reservoirs. Nitzschia gandersheimiensis, Gomphonema parvulum and Cyclotella meneghiniana were the most tolerant species to pollution.
