Abstract
The lakes in Kashmir depict a marked change in the algal assemblages with the change in physical and chemical environment. Since the algal dynamics seems to be primarily governed by these factors it is for this reason that no particular algal group gets established in the systems throughout the year. In general the average algal population of the Manasbal lake has been found to be quite different from that of the Bod-Sar lake. The former has rich population of Bacillariophyceae while the latter supports rich population of Cyanophyceae. The overall algal density of Bod-Sar lake is 67 % higher than that of the Manasbal lake, a feature which can be related to its shallow depth, terrestrial influence and to the presence of abundant macrophytic vegetation which supports a rich algal population.
