Abstract

A study of the occurrence of Foraminfera species and the environmental factors influencing their presence in Tarkwa bay was conducted from February 1985 to December 1986. Twenty-one species representing fourteen genera were identified. Nonion depressulus, Textularia sagittula Defrance and Ammonia beccarii were the three most common species. Planktonic forms were not common. A large number of arenaceous and calcareous benthonic foraminifera species were recovered in the death assemblage. The abundance of living foraminifera was shown to be dependent on the silt-clay content, total organic matter and stable salinity regime. These factors also limited the populations of associated fauna at the bay.
