Abstract

On the Mt. Picton massif is a number of lakes and tarns mostly carved by ice in the dolerite cap of the mountain. In their water chemistry they resemble lakes elsewhere in Tasmania on dolerite in having an ionic composition between seawater and World Average Freshwater. Optically, the lakes are of the "deep green window" type with green wavelengths penetrating to considerable depths. The phytoplankton is made up principally of Dinobryon, desmids, genera of Chlorococcales and dinoflagellates. In all of these regards the lakes are typical of the eastern limnological province of Tasmania. Some algae and invertebrates of the Picton lakes have not been found elsewhere in Tasmania.
