Abstract

Elemental stoichiometry in food chains and the control of phytoplankton growth and community composition via nutrient ratios, rather than absolute concentrations has been the subject of controversial discussion for some time. I was well aware of different "schools" defending their opinions, which I considered to be a problem related to the immaturity of the field, when N. G. Bulgakov and P. A. Levich submitted a paper to the Archiv für Hydrobiologie. However, I was surprised to learn of a "nutrient-ratio school" in Russia of which I was unaware. Evidently, the three referees I asked to review this paper were as surprised as I was. I considered this to be proof for the seriously impeded information flow out of Russia.
