Abstract

In the course of my work on the system of the Stylommatophora (d. H. Nordsieck 1985, 1986) I was obliged to occupy with the other groups of the Pulmonata in order to be able to judge of the character states by outgroup comparison and to evaluate the systematic rank of the stylommatophoran subgroups. As result it turned out that the systems of the Pulmonata proposed until now are insufficient, because they are not based on a phylogeny worked out by a character analysis. In addition, some systems were established by considering of only one or few characters resp. character complexes. Therefore, an effort was made to come to a phylogenetic system of the Pulmonata; for that purpose 1) as many characters as possible were analysed, 2) from this analysis the phylogeny was reconstructed, and 3) a system based on this phylogeny was worked out. In this preface it should already be stressed that the Systellommatophora, which were excluded from the Pulmonata until recently by several authors (Minichev & Starobogatov 1975, Salvini-Plawen 1980, Haszprunar 1985, Golikov & Starobogatov 1988), are pulmonates; by a thorough character analysis (van Mol 1967, Tillier 1984, Haszprunar & Huber 1990, and this paper) it was proved that the Systellommatophora belong together with the other pulmonates to a monophyletic group (see part II).
