Abstract

The eradication of tsetse populations by the sterile insect technique depends on the production of large numbers of males for sterilization and release. Large-scale rearing of tsetse Glossina morsitans (Westwood 1850), on the living host is often problematic and always costly. The paper describes the development of artificial rearing techniques and recent results obtained at the Seibersdorf laboratory. A new membrane based on a silicone gel pressed into thin layers has been developed as well as an all metal electrical heating system to warm the blood and membrane.
