Abstract
The genus Thereuonema Verhoeff 1904 serves as a model in the search for systematic criteria in the Scutigeromorpha, according to the suggestions of Würmli (1974 a). As in the Lithobiomorpha (Tobias 1969, 1974), the head pigmentation and the general colouration are the best criteria for the distinction of the various species. The exoskeletal prominences on the tergal plates also offer very good specific characteristics, while the female gonopods are less important. Changes which take place in these characteristics during the postembryonic development are fully described. From 23 taxa of Thereuonema (5 nomina nuda), only 3 species remain valid, namely T. syriaca Verhoeff 1905, T. tuberculata (Wood 1861) and T. turkestana Verhoeff 1905.
