Abstract
Prey capture of Pirata piraticus (Clerck 1758), P. piscatorius (Clerck 1758) and P. knorri (Scopoli 1763) (Araneae: Lycosidae) was analysed. These species are capable of catching prey that lives under the water surface. The capture action is primarily triggered by an optical stimulus. Reaction frequency is not higher with a vibratory stimulus; vibrating prey, however, is bitten more frequently than nonvibrating. A model for prey sharing amongst P. piraticus and its food competitors is suggested.
