Abstract
Sacculus cells of nephridial organs in Tracheata, nephrocytes, and the cells of known ecdysial glands in Diplopoda and Chilopoda are nearly identical in construction and ultrastructure. They are always limited towards the haemocoel by their basement membrane. The construction of their cortex indicates that they serve for selective uptake of substances after ultrafiltration from the extracellular space. Characteristical cell organelles indicate furthermore that the absorbed substances - above all proteins - may be transformed and that the products may be partly stored in large vacuoles. The different physiological role of the three organs described is not readily apparent from their ultrastructural appearance. Experimentation alone can reveal the specific function, for instance, of ecdysial glands. They are considered, however, as specialized nephrocytes.
