Abstract
# Based primarily on Hennig’s principles of phyletic classification, the relationships of the superfamilia Dryopoidea to other superfamiliae (Byrrhoidea, Elateroidea, Cantharoidea, Artematopoidea) within the series Elateriformia is discussed. Furthermore, the possible bifurcated splitting, i. e. sister group relations of the familiae (Eulichadidae, Ptilodactylidae, Chelonariidae, Psephenidae, Elmidae, Dryopidae, Limnichidae, Heteroceridae) within the superfamilia Dryopoidea are pointed out by analysing some main apomorphic and plesiomorphic features of imagines and larvae. The most appropriate way of commemorating Willi Hennig is surely the attempt to apply his methods and concepts in the classification of insects. The more recent and equally regretted sudden death of the noted British entomologist H. E. Hinton makes a review on Hennigian lines of the phylogeny and classification of Hinton’s favourite group Dryopoidea particularly timely now.
