Abstract
The message of Carl H. Lindroth’s decease cast a deep gloom on all his friends and colleagues. The high-spirited, witty Carl would no longer be one of us, was the spontaneous reaction. The expert at friendship and at creating an agreeable atmosphere at gatherings will never again appear among Swedish biologists. Carl H. Lindroth was born in Lund on September 8, 1905. After school in Göteborg, he began academic studies in Stockholm and graduated with a Master of Science in zoology, botany and geography in 1926. He received a Ph. D. in Uppsala in 1932. During 1924—31 he was at times assistant at the Museum of Natural History in Göteborg, and for a short time employed as assistant at the Swedish Institute for Agricultural Research. He was a teacher for 18 years, before being appointed lecturer in entomology at the University of Stockholm in 1947. In 1951, he was appointed the first holder of the new ordinary professorship in entomology at Lund’s University. He retired on a pension 1971 and devoted himself completely to the science of entomology. During his years as a school-teacher Carl accomplished an enormous scientific output with great personal sacrifices, and carried out a demanding activity as an author of popular science and as a popular lecturer. Carl’s capacity as a worker in the science of entomology is astonishing with regard to his many-sided intellectual energy devoted for the benefit of Swedish schools over the 18 years he was a teacher. This work he was able to combine with achieving the furtherance of methodical science. He continually published scientific papers of excellent quality.
