Abstract

The first attempt to hold an international meeting of insect embryologists materialized on 25th, August, 1976, on the occasion of the XV International Congress of Entomology, held in Washington, D. C.. The symposium, entitled «Selected Topics in Insect Embryology», was organized by Professor Dr. L. Butler (USA) and convened by Professor Dr. S. N. Visscher (Bozeman, USA). Eight invited speakers presented papers on various aspects of insect embryology, and the symposium was a successful one. It was proposed during the informal meeting held in the evening of 25th, to organize this type of meeting of insect embryologists again in the near future. The idea which was initiated in Washington, finally came to fruition on the morning of 7th, August, 1980, during the XVI International Congress of Entomology held in Kyoto. The symposium entitled «Recent Advances in Insect Embryology» was organized by us. It was chaired by Professors Dr. K. Kalthoff (Austin, USA) and Dr. S. N. Visscher. Unfortunately, Professors Dr. C. Jura (Cracow, Poland), Dr. K. Sander (Freiburg im Breisgau, F. R. Germany) and A. Zachvatkin (Moscow, USSR) could not attend. Six other invited colleagues from West Germany, the USA, and Japan read papers on distinct themes. Their contributions are presented in this issue of the esteemed International Journal for Entomology, Entomologia Generalis. We would like to thank the Editor-in-Chief of this journal, Professor Dr. A. W. Steffan of the Bergische Universität at Wuppertal, F. R. Germany, for kindly having offered and given us this opportunity. This account consists of 3 parts. The first part concerns descriptive embryology in insects. Professor O. Larink (Braunschweig, F. R. Germany) reports on the embryonic and postembryonic development of some Thysanura, while Dr. H. Mori (Tokyo, Japan) gives a comprehensive review of embryonic midgut epithelium of insects in general. In the second part, Professors Dr. K. Kalthoff and Dr. H. Yajima (Mito, Japan), who have long developed techniques for the production of malformations in the embryos of Chironomidae, disclose interesting re sults of their experiments. In the last part, Professor Dr. A. Dorn (Mainz/Rhein, F. R. Germany) contributes a paper concerning the action of hormones involved in the embryogenesis of the [Hemiptera] Oncopeltus fasciatus Dallas 1852, and Professor Dr. S. N. Visscher writes on peripheral ganglia of central nervous origin in hemimetabolous insects.
