Abstract
The Japanese bee fauna is composed of 36 genera, and is best characterized by the subfamiliae Nomiinae and Xylocopinae, as well as by the high percentage of components from the genus Hylaeus Fabricius 1793, and by the absence of members of the subfamilia Dufoureinae. Latitudinal gradient in the Japanese Archipelago and chorological gradient in the Kurile Is are clear for the genus Bombus Latreille 1802. Endemism is very high for Japanese species of the genus Xylocopa Latreille 1802 and wild bees of the Ogasawara (or Bonin) Is. 23 bee species common to Japan as well as to Europe are pointed out.
