Abstract

The organization of this issue and his role on the editorial board of Entomologia Generalis typify one of the several major areas of achievement in Dr Gressitt’s career. He founded and edited 2 journals, a series of monographs, a series of handbooks, and a many volumed faunal series, all of which continue to be published. He took an active role in the editing of several other journals. He organized numerous symposia and saw their proceedings through publication. He planned and edited a number of important topical columes. At the time of his death, he had organized 2 symposia, both of which, like this present volume, are to be published as memorials to him. Dr Gressitt had extraordinary energy and dedication. He packed the equivalent of several productive careers into a single lifetime and, at 67, he showed no indication of lessening his pace. He refused to bow to what others would consider to be insurmountable difficulties, and this faith in himself was translated into belief in him by others. As he climbed many topographic mountains in his biological explorations, the analogy of figurative mountain-climbing in other aspects of his life is easily made. In 1970, he started for the fifth time to explore a possible route to the summit of Mt Amingwiwa in Papua New Guinea, and that time he succeeded. The important point is that he appeared not to question that he would eventually reach his goal - if not that time, then another.
