Abstract
A multidisciplinary approach has been applied to reveal the nature of the Mohorovicic discontinuity in Central Asia. Deep seismic sounding (DSS), gravimetric data, information from the study of xenoliths of deep-seated origin, and experimental work on the gabbro (basalt) - granulite - eclogite transition have shown that the Moho in Central Asia does not represent a sharply defined physical surface. Instead, the Moho appears to be a zone with a thickness varying from several hundred meters in epiplatform areas (e.g., the Touran plate), to 5-10 km thick "transition zone" in tectonically active areas (e.g., South Pamirs and South Tien-Shan). In agreement with a previous study of the author (Khamrabaev, 1977), the Moho is characterized by both physical and chemical properties.
