Abstract

Chlorophyll-a (chla) concentrations down the Elbe (36 sampling sites along ca. 1100 km) were followed in connection with activities of the International Commission for the River Elbe Protection. Data obtained from two helicopter sampling flights (May and September 1994) indicate the pattern of phytoplankton development along the river from its uppermost third to the North Sea. Maxima of chla (263 µg 1-¹ on 11-12 May) were found in the middle Elbe section, i.e. between km 4.1 and 318.1 in Germany. The chla data indicate the phytoplankton response to nutrient levels in the Elbe.
