Abstract

This paper presents a set of seven guiding principles for the ecological rehabilitation of the floodplains of large rivers. The principles are derived from existing policies (Dutch and European) and general ecological knowledge. When choices have to be made about projects to carry out or between possible measures within projects, the set of principles can be a helpful tool for policy makers and project designers. By bridging the gap between general policies and practical dilemmas, the principles can help to structure complex discussions.
