Abstract

During the dry summer of 2003, the Amstel River played a crucial role in the transport of fresh water to the areas in The Netherlands where drought and siltation were likely to cause damage to agriculture and nature conservation areas. The decision-making process about the transport and distribution of fresh water was supported by model simulations with a model application of the Amstel River basin, that was set up in the simulation package Sobek. Soon after the model simulations were ready, decisions were made and fresh water was transported from lake IJ, via the River Amstel, to the province of Zuid-Holland. The entire operation was well monitored and the model application could be tested in practice and subsequently improved. This offered a unique opportunity for the testing of the Model Evaluation Tool, since the tool could be applied during all four stages of a modelling project in a short time: definition of the management task, model code selection, model performance assessment and a posteriori project review.
