Abstract

The volume-composition relationship for kesterite-černyite solid solution (Cu2Zn1-xCdxSnS4) was determined by X-ray powder diffraction technique on synthetic materials. The unit cell parameters were determined by least squares refinement using a computer program which allowed for the structure factor in the auto-indexing process. The unit cell parameters and volume are clearly dependent on the Zn/Cd ratio. At the negative deviation from linearity, the a-parameter of the unit cell increases with Cd content. The c-parameter, being only slightly different for the two endmembers, shows a positive deviation from linearity with a maximum in the composition range x = 0.30-0.35. A jump in the c-parameter, resulting from the expected transition kesterite (I4)-černyite (I42m), however, has been recorded in the composition range x = 0.22-0.23.
