Disorder diffuse scattering in K-hollandite K1.54Mg0.77Ti7.23O16

Abstract

Diffuse X-ray scattering of synthetic K-hollandite was investigated at room temperature, 35 and 875 K. Most prominent are diffuse layers, diffuse satellite reflections superimposed on these layers, and a diffuse streak system. The analysis reveals that the decomposition into a 1-d substructure (K-chains) and a well ordered 3-d framework structure is an oversimplification. In particular, the framework distorts into column-like microdomains, the streak system is assigned to the interfaces between them. At high temperature the mutual influence is gradually lost.
