Abstract

Erosion rates can be measured by comparing the depth dependent concentrations of radionuclides produced by cosmic rays in minerals from regions with negligible erosion with the region which is investigated. Calculations of 36Cl production by cosmic rays and natural radioactivity (uranium, thorium) are discussed and compared with the measured 36Cl contents in limestone of 36 (21 Solnhofen (W. Germany), a region with negligible erosion. The 36Cl/Cl ratios in the limestone samples have been determined with accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) at the Munich accelerator laboratory. First results of Allchar dolomite are presented.
