Abstract
Among the integral geochemical detectors of solar neutrinos lorandite (205Tl) has the lowest energy threshold (0.052 MeV) and the longest exposure time (4.2 my). This makes it a unique tool in the difficult task of measuring the whole spectrum of solar neutrinos but equally hard for interpreting its results. The results obtained so far in the LOREX Project which encourage further research are: - Genesis of the deposit - Structural-geological model and geological cross-section of the Crven Dol locality - Mineralogical composition of lorandite, co-genetic minerals and the surrounding rock, Pb, U, Th and other trace element concentrations in these minerals - Origin of the thallium mineralization in Crven Dol - Geological age of the mineralization in Crven Dol - Determination of the erosion rate by the method of quantitative geomorphological analysis - Separation of lorandite and co-genetic minerals from the Crven Dol locality Further research, which is either in progress or awaits elaboration, along the following lines is needed: - Investigation of lorandite and co-genetic minerals from depths greater than those explored so far - Concerning the problem of background: ~ Application of nuclear methods to check the results for the erosion rate as estimated by the geomorphological analysis ~ Determination of background quantity of 205Pb in lorandite as a function of its present-day depth in the deposit - Separation of lead from lorandite, co-genetic minerals and the surrounding rock - Detection of the 205Pb concentration by AMS or some alternative method - Determination of the neutrino capture cross-section (via the ft-value for the ß-bound decay, and else. We firmly believe that further colaborative work on the LOREX Project will in the end yield the results which truely complement the results of other solar neutrino experiments (37Cl experiment, GALLEX, SAGE, Kamiokande, etc.).
