Hydrothermal recrystallization of PGE- and Fe-Ni-sulfide assemblages.

Abstract

Remobilization of Platinum-Group Elements (PGE) under reducing hydrothermal solutions was studied experimentally with Pt-bearing cooperite + (Pt, Fe) alloy + pyrrhotite assemblage and Ir-bearing Fe-Ni-Mss. At relatively low temperatures (230-240 °C), only different reactions of sulfide transformation depending on sulfur fugacity, were observed. Arsenic, however, remains inactive in this process and no arsenides or sulphoarsenides were formed. Under higher sulfur fugacity (+H2S) the reaction products consisted of: a) PtS and b) more sulfur-enriched sulfide (Ir-bearing thiospinel from the series greigite-violarite in place of Fe-Ni-Ir-Mss). Under controlled sulfur fugacity, these compositions are stable at lgfS2 > -3.4 (PtS) and > -4.3 [(Ni,Fe,Ir)3S4].
