Abstract
Melting experiments at one atmosphere on a spinel lherzolite and garnet peridotite give solidus temperatures between 1205—1225° C; liquidus temperatures between 1650—1675° C. Varying run durations produce different quantities of liquid; at least four days are required for equilibrium. The conflicting results of other workers may be explained by differing run durations. The fusion versus temperature curve for mantle material is not a straight line. At the beginning of melting only a small temperature increase produces ~ 10% liquid by fusion of clinopyroxene and garnet. The fusion curve exhibits a plateau between 1224—1300° C, then begins to rise as orthopyroxene melts.
