Abstract
The phase relations of the condensed Co-Ni-S system at 600° C are discussed. At this temperature Co-Ni alloys, Co9S8, Co1-x, Co3S4 and CoS2; alphaNi3±xS2, alphaNi1-xS and NiS2 are stable binary phases. In the ternary system the following extensive solid solution series exist: Between the disulfides (cattierite and vaesite) a complete solid solution extends through the system, and parallel to this the sulfospinel Co3S4 (linneite) forms a considerable ternary solid solution series up to 65 wt% Ni3S4. Further on, a complete monosulfide solid solution field (M1-xS) connects the binary phases Co1-xS and alphaNi1-xS. Cobaitpentlandite, Co9S8, takes approximately 20 wt% nickelsulfide, whereas the high temperature modification of heazlewoodite (alphaNi3±xS2) takes even 40 wt% cobaltsulfide in solid solution. This high temperature (Co, Ni)3±xS2 has been indexed cubic. The alloys between the pure metals cobalt and nickel display a complete series. The ternary phase equilibria, that is, the divariant two phase regions as well as the univariant three phase assemblages are demonstrated in Fig. 1.
