Abstract
A piston-cylinder apparatus of high precision has been developed for pressures up to 30 kb. This apparatus is relatively simple and uses two pistons without a “base plug” and without an end load ram. For details see text and Figs. 1—6. The equilibrium pressure of the albite = jadeite + quartz reaction at 600° C has been determined at 16.2 ± 0.5 kb, see Fig. 8 using NaCl and AgCl as pressure transmitting materials. Experiments have been conducted using cells of various metals and using different pressure transmitting materials. The most important factor reducing friction is a well polished core of WC. A lead foil is not suited to reduce pressure losses. The amount of friction is approximately 0.5 kb with AgCl, 0.9 kb with NaCl, 4 kb with BN, and 5 kb with pyrophyllite as pressure transmitting materials, see Fig. 7.
