Abstract

The incomplete characterized mercury iodide mineral coccinite, HgI2, was found at Ronneburg, Thuringia/Germany. The mineral forms deep red crystals on sulphur. Coccinite is tetragonal, space group P42/nmc, with lattice constants a = 4.376(4), c = 12.41(1) Å. By TXRF analysis was found the empirical formula Hg1.00I192, which is very near to the ideal composition. Coccinite occurs in the Lichtenberg uranium open cast as sublimation product in an area with gas exhalations from in situ burning graptolithic slate in the depth.
