Serpentine mineral from Crni Kamen, Serbia:

Krstanović, I.

Abstract

A non fibrous, splintery serpentine mineral which occurs in veins in tectonized black serpentinite near Crni Kamen, Kačanik (Serbia, Yugoslavia) has lattice constants α = 5.319(2), b = 9.204(3), c = 14.708(3) Å, β = 96.91 (3)°. The chemical composition obtained by standard wet chemical procedure, expressed by structural formula is (Mg2.83Fe2+0.08Fe3+0.03) (Si1.97Al0.03)O4.90(OH)4. Rietveld analysis of X-ray diffraction pattern revealed the structural model consisting of two basic serpentine layers in AA.. . succession with interlayer shift along the x-axis (not including tetrahedral basal oxygens and silicon atoms) of approximately 0.18 · α. A two-layers repeat is due to the position of O(1) and of distortion arising in alternate layers. Analysis of X-ray diffraction data of two specimens of Povlen-type chrysotile revealed the same interlayer shift as in the mineral from Crni Kamen.
