Abstract

The scientific papers and the discussions presented and held at the "Symposium on the Methods and Tendencies of Stratigraphy" held from October 13-14, 1970, at the Natural Sciences Campus of Paris University at Orsay under the auspices of the French Committee on Stratigraphy have made it possible to get to a full and comprehensive understanding of the different stratigraphical methods. From the papers read on biostratigraphical methods there will above all be remembered the precision reached by certain studies on vertebrates, the importance of the microfossils, and the need for paleoecological investigations. Within the framework of lithostratigraphical methods foremost emphasis must be placed on the growing importance of the sedimentological analyses, on the very clean-cut both detailed and over-all assessments being obtained at least for the same basin reach by means of certain particular beds, which often are discovered by the drill-logs and by the limits of measurements having been determined on the strength of nuclear magnetism and gamma ray logs. Summing all this up the Symposium has given a vivid picture of present-day lively trends in stratigraphy, of the importance of investigating and thus more easily and more economically determining the well-proven real and promising new genera and species of comprehensive scopes of evolution for assessing particular reaches of sedimentation, of the great appeal emanating from lithostratigraphical methods for establishing regional stratigraphies, of the need for marking down a certain priority pattern in putting decisive fact-finding on focus while having the choice between lithostratigraphical and biostratigraphical methods with a view to obtaining a truthful chronostratigraphy.
