Abstract

Molecular phylogenetic analysis based on the sequences from two chloroplast loci (trnL-trnF, atpB-rbcL) and the nuclear ribosomal ITS (1+2), which included two of three species currently assigned to the genus Campyliadelphus, suggested the inclusion of the type species, C. chrysophyllus, in the genus Campylium and hence the synonymisation of the two genera. The second broadly distributed species of the genus, C. elodes, proved to be unrelated to C. chrysophyllus, forming an isolated lineage basal to the genera Cratoneuron and Palustriella. We therefore propose that a new genus, Kandaea, is erected for this species. The third species currently recognised in the genus, Campyliadelphus glaucocarpoides, described from north-eastern China and not reported later, is tentatively moved to the genus Campylium, based on the overall similarity with C. chrysophyllum. We provide an amended description of the genus Campylium.
