Abstract
In connection with the examination of the diatoms of some deep sea cores of Eocene age, we encountered a large number of objects which generally fall under the name Liostephania and the two genus names Actinogonium and Dictyolampra. The samples studied for the present report were submitted by Dr. Lloyd H. Burckle of Lamont Geological observatory, Palisades, New York. They were taken by personnel of the Research Vessel Robert Conrad in 1965, Cruise 9. This cruise was under the direction of Dr. Maurice Ewing of the same institution. We are under obligations to him and Dr. Burckle for making the samples available to us and for many courtesies in the past. Among the samples submitted, three furnished the objects which form the basis of the present study. These were 40960-2 and 40961-12. The diatoms in all of the samples were sufficiently abundant and well preserved to justify an Eocene age determination, and they were similar in many respects to those of Barbados.
