Abstract
In July, 1966, a few soil samples were taken from a relatively undisturbed tail-grass prairie plot in northwestern Iowa known as Cayler Prairie. Since diatoms found in these samples were not only numerous, but quite alive, subsequent samples were made in August, 1966 and again in the summers of 1967 and 1968. This paper records briefly some information about the diatoms and diatom communities examined thus far from these mature prairie soil habitats. The papers of Bristol (1920), Petersen (1915) (1935), and Lund (1945) (1946) are probably the most widely known earlier works on soil diatoms and remain today as important references for any study of soil diatoms. Although not specifically dealing with ‘soil’ diatoms, Hustedt (1934) (1942) (1949) produced a series of papers dealing with ‘aerie’ habitats, or ‘aerophilic’ diatoms. Several taxa dealt with in these papers have been found in the soil habitat in the U. S.
