Abstract
Although for a field ecologist the moment of his retirement from university by no means implies scientific inactivity, it is perhaps a good opportunity to look backwards and forwards and to give some very personal views on his field of science. I was asked to do so by the editor of this journal, that is to translate into English my Dutch farewell speech held on May 7, 1987 at Utrecht University, The Netherlands. I shall give it in a somewhat modified form. First of all I must apologize for two shortcomings. When discussing a theme so broad and general as the present one, it is unavoidable that many things will be said which are familiar to quite a few readers. And in the second place it is virtually impossible to cite all relevant authors. The statements will therefore often be a mixture of quoted and non-quoted literature data, common knowledge and personal views.
