Abstract
A method for determination of shoots density in plant communities has been tested in a number of arctic vegetation types. The results obtained were considered satisfactory by giving an objective and true picture of the vegetation and by opening up the possibility of estimations of primary production. Life form or distributional type spectra of various communities are calculated according to shoot densities (frequency sums), mere presences of the species or both. Special problems arise by investigations of open fell field communities. A combination of line interception and shoot density determination is proposed by analysing certain vegetation mosaics on patterned ground.
