Abstract

The phytocoenoses and mycocoenoses (macromycetes) of nine Tuscan chestnut coppices have been studied. From the phytosociological point of view, below an altitude of 525 m, the vascular coenoses can be assigned to the Rubia peregrina-Quercus cerris community (Quercion robori-petraeae) and above this altitude to the Physospermo-Quercetum petraeae (Carpinion betuli). The phytosociological results were compared with the mycocoenological ones. The fungal communities also show altitudinal differentiation but the division point is a little higher. Qualitative and quantitative production of carpophores were monthly correlated with thermopluviometric data. Comparison with mycocoenoses of mediterranean environments of Tuscany (Quercion ilicis and Tuberario lignosae-Callunetum) led to the identification of numerous differential species of chestnut forests; their preferential habitat have been identified by means of bibliographical data.
