Abstract
This paper documents the present status of meadows and pastures in Schleswig-Holstein. By comparing historical and present-day vegetation maps, floristic change within the vegetation types during the last decades is illustrated. Caused by intensified agricultural use, development shows the following characteristics: 1. On peat soils, the formerly extensively used meadows of Calthion-stands have been converted into intensive pastures of the Lolio-Potentillion type. The remaining wet meadows are mostly grazed or lie fallow. 2. On mineral soils, a dramatic decline of poorly productive and wet pastures of Cynosurion and Arrhenatheretum elatioris is noted. Synecological investigations gave the following results: 1. The floristic structuring of Calthion into types on low base-saturated or high base-saturated peat soils can be confirmed, based on the distribution of parameters such as pH-value and S-value. 2. Within the Calthion, only those subtypes used as extensive meadows are found at mesotrophic sites. 3. By means of the parameter "groundwater fluctuations", it is possible on peat soils to distinguish ecologically between Calthion and Ranunculo-Alopecuretum. Suggestions are made for a synsystematical evaluation of the vegetation types mentioned. Most notably, a justification of the recognition of Lolio-Plantaginetum is made.
