Abstract

According to a hypothesis set up by Black & Harper (1979), buttresses of lowland tropical forest trees could also account for organs granting a higher competitive value. To test that hypothesis measures were taken in a forest on a coral cay off the northern coast of Papua New Guinea. Results point out that on the average buttressed trees are a little more apart from their neighbours than unbuttressed ones and that consequently the number of neighbours was higher whatever the species may be.
