Abstract

Curves of species' success plotted on the ordinate against an environmental factor on the abscissa have been used to describe species' tolerances and changes in tolerances under competition. Overlapping curves have been used to describe vegetation or to generate scales of tolerances. The manufacture, uses, and implications of such curves and sets of curves are discussed. Vegetation is poorly described by sets of overlapping tolerance curves without the ordered species-stand matrix from which the curves must be derived.
