Abstract
Geoconservation has a long history. Criteria for evaluation of geotopes are well developed and used for selection of site inventories and for nature protection over the last hundred years. In well developed sets of criteria uniqueness as well as representativity are included, and points towards an understanding of both the special and the common as parts of our geological heritage. This complexity is an important attribute in the term geodiversity.
