Abstract

The Azores archipelago (a Portuguese Autonomous Region) is located on the triple junction between the North American, Eurasian and African (or Nubian) plates. In general terms, the intervening plate boundaries are the Mid-Atlantic Rift (MAR), separating the American plate from the Eurasian and African plates, and the Azores-Gibraltar Fault Zone (AGFZ), bounding the latter two plates.
