Abstract
The actual appearance of the earth is a flash of the more than four billion years lasting history of the blue planet: an endless story of oceans and mountains emerging and vanishing and of life evolving in great diversity. This development resulted in numerous traces found in rock and sediment assemblages all over the world, the most illustrative and best preserved of which are specified as “geosites” (Geotope) in order to stress their special importance as natural documents which deserve our special care and protection. Geosites encompass the countryside and natural environment, including man-made geological sequences as well as landforms at locations where geological forces and prehistoric life have left visible traces (geodiversity). Thus geosites are outstanding documents of earth genesis. They are part of the natural heritage of humanity and rank among the goods to be preserved for future generations.
