Abstract
Protection of the environment has been a strong focus in politics and society, ever since the Rio de Janeiro conference (UNCED) in 1992. While it still lags behind economic interests of industry and governments, most countries have now subscribed to its importance. In order to reach a high level of sympathy for nature conservation, basic education of the public has to be developed. In this regard, the importance of the geosciences in basic education is often underestimated.
