Abstract

The Middle Devonian sediments of the Eifel Mountains have been studied since more than 200 years. They are remarkably rich in well preserved invertebrate faunas. Due to the occurrence of bentonites and several biostratigraphic relevant groups such as miospores, conodonts, ostracodes, and cephalopodes, this area also has high significance with regard to bio- and chronostratigraphy, e. g. the Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) of the Early-Mid Devonian boundary is located in the Eifel Mountains. Due to the long lasting geological and palaeontological research there is a keen interest in geosciences among the public resulting in the establishment of geological trails and the successful marketing of the geological and palaeontological heritage.
