Abstract
The Langtang valley is located in the inner Himalayas of central-north Nepal. It extends in an east-west direction and was strongly glaciated during the Pleistocene. The Langtang Khola drains the valley. One of the tributary glaciers of the main valley glacier was the Ledrub-Lirung Tsang. This glacier deposited moraines near the village of Kyangjin Kharka (3,920 m a.s.l.). The Ledrub-Lirung Tsang has often reached the Langtang valley during the Late-Glacial and the Holocene. Morphological, sedimentological, pedological and lichenometrical studies should help to differentiate the ridges of the moraine-complex of Kyangjin Kharka.(1) The outer moraine of the Ledrub-Lirung Tsang, which dammed the main valley, is visible in several locations. The ridges show homogeneous material from the catchment area of the Ledrub-Lirung Tsang. The podsolised soils, similar to the soils of the main valley glacier Langtang Tsang, are typical for youngest Late-Glacial deposits.(2) The inner moraines of the Ledrub-Lirung Tsang are located in the main valley, but have not blocked it. The soils of these ridges show no signs of podsolisation and seem morphologically younger. The thallus diameters of Rhizocarpum geographicium coll. show accumulations at 170, 160 and 140 mm. These observations indicate Holocene ages.(3) The soils of the innermost moraines of the Ledrub-Lirung Tsang, which built up the glacier basin NW of Kyangjin Kharka, are Entisols. The diameters of Rhizocarpum geographicium coll. show accumulations between 40 and 80 mm. The moraine basin was deposited during a glacier advance of the "Little Ice Age".
