Abstract
The Mississippian (Dinantian) rocks of Ireland are a main target for deep geothermal exploration in Ireland. Exploiting their potential as a future energy source is largely dependent on our understanding of their stratigraphy and structure. This article summarises the Lower and Middle Mississippian succession of Ireland incorporating new data from Geological Survey Ireland work in central-western Ireland. It includes a short summary of geothermal potential of the Dinantian basins derived from limited previous exploration and the GeoERA HotLime Project.
