Kurzfassung
Am 1. Oktober 1911, an Hermann Credners 70. Geburtstag, überreichte Prof. Wahnschaffe ihm im Namen von 346 Mitstiftern den Betrag von 21.962 Mark, die "Hermann Credner-Stiftung". Credner überwies den Betrag der Deutschen Geologischen Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Arbeiten begabter junger Wissenschaftler. 1913 wurde erstmals ein Stipendium an einen jungen Geologen vergeben, bis 1921 weitere 4. Die Geldentwertung nach dem 1. Weltkrieg ließ das Vermögen der Stiftung bis auf etwa 10 % zusammenschmelzen. In der Folgezeit wurden keine Stipendien vergeben: man wollte erst einmal Kapital ansammeln. Der 2. Weltkrieg und der anschließende Währungsverfall machten auch dieses Kapital wieder zunichte. Im Jahre 1938 hatte Frau Adda v. Helldorf, früher Gasthörerin bei Prof. Credner und mit der Familie befreundet, in ihrem Testament den Großteil ihres Vermögens der Hermann Credner-Stiftung vermacht. Sie starb 1944, und 1957 wurde der Deutschen Geologischen Gesellschaft als Rechtsträger der Stiftung 3/4 des Vermögens von Frau v. Helldorf übertragen. Dank des wirtschaftlichen Aufschwunges nach den Kriege stieg der Geldwert dieses Vermögens rasch an. Seit 1960 konnten 42 junge Geologen mit dem Hermann Credner-Preis für ihre wissenschaftlich wertvollen Arbeiten ausgezeichnet werden.
Abstract
On the 1. of October 1911 Hermann Credner celebrated his 70th birthday. On the occasion of this anniversary Prof. Wahnschaffe presented an amount of 21.962 Mark on the behalf of 346 additional founders, the "Hermann Credner Foundation". Credner transferred the total amount to the Deutsche Geologische Gesellschaft as a fund to provide support to the work of young, talented scientists. It was in 1913, when for the first time a sholarship was granted a young geologist. Alltogether four sholarships were granted up to 1921. The depreciation of money after World War I made the fund decrease down to one tenth. Therefore, no sholarship was granted in the years to come for the reason to accumulate more capital. Once again the depreciation of money following World War II almost destroyed the accumulated capital. In 1938 Mrs. Adda v. Helldorf, a guest Student of Prof. Credner and friend of the family, bequested in her last will most of her own family-property to the Hermann Credner Foundation. She died in 1944. In 1957 then, three fourth of her former property was transferred to the Deutsche Geologische Gesellschaft, the legal holder of the foundation. Thanks to the economic boom after World War II the precuniary equivalent of this property increased. So, since 1960, the extraordinary scientific work of 42 young geologists could be credited with the Hermann Credner Prize.
